Matt:
I think they're all terrible but in the best way
Ariana:
no yeah. Usually it's hilarious and charming. But [The Family Values Episode] was like, you can't be the kind of stupid the show is, and that kind of stupid too. Everyone has their stupid threshold...
Matt:
do you think lighting the mayor's house on fire was a bad move? I thought it was hilarious
Ariana:
right? I think my favorite thing is when you take a step back and look at it as an actual town. Like, what the fuck do they think a mayor does? How incestuous must the politics be? and meaningless? and what the fuck mayor? And then there's the ridiculous mom-son-mom dynamic. That's not healthy. In real life that would break somewhere, someone would just fucking leave or call the real police or a lawyer
Matt:
YES. But seriously, a mayor would never have a power trip...and nobody would ever cut down the mayor's apple trees.
Ariana:
and the sets on the show? the ridiculous sets? Every room is decorated with this complex heavy forest imagery
Matt:
I ALMOST like the fairy tale world better. But not by much.
Ariana:
oh I just definitely do. I like the costumes
Matt:
because the fairy tale world feels like a huge joke
Ariana:
yes!
Matt:
and then the real world is still a joke
Ariana:
they just went for it
Matt:
yeah I think one of my favorite parts of the show so far was the jiminy cricket episode because he's a shitty person in the fairy tale world and he's a shitty person in real life and is controlled by his parents and then he dies. He dies right? Wait i don't think so.
Ariana:
no he lives. Enlightened
Matt:
ugh I think I projected there. Have you tried to concisely explain the plot of once upon a time to anyone?
Ariana:
Can you?
"fairy tale world gets cursed and moved into the real world and it follows the hero's journey of getting it back"
Matt:
it sounds really dumb when it's explained that way. Not that your explanation is flawed, but it does
Ariana:
it is pretty dumb
Matt:
Do you think there's a moral center to this show? And if so, what is it?
Ariana:
Oh god I hope not, I hate when they point that way. I like that it's just tales of good vs evil with magic and fairy tales without any deeper meaning. That's why that family episode sucked. It's like a man with functioning legs telling someone in a wheelchair how to use the wheelchair and we're the people in the wheelchair and man, if I'm voluntarily watching you you can't be that kind of stupid.
Matt:
haven't you noticed that the show is kind of like LOST?
Ariana:
have you noticed an explosion of LOST comparisons to tv in your life? "Terra Nova: like crappy LOST with dinosaurs"
